           Attheotherendofthehallfromtheplatform,theladieshadeclipsedthemselves.OnthiswallhunglargepicturesofPresidentDavisandGeorgia’sown"LittleAlec"Stephens,Vice–PresidentoftheConfederacy.Abovethemwasanenormousflagand,beneath,onlongtableswasthelootofthegardensofthetown,ferns,banksofroses,crimsonandyellowandwhite,proudsheathsofgoldengladioli,massesofvaricolorednasturtiums,tallstiffhollyhocksrearingdeepmaroonandcreamyheadsabovetheotherflowers.Amongthem,candlesburnedserenelylikealtarfires.Thetwofaceslookeddownonthescene,twofacesasdifferentascouldbepossibleintwomenatthehelmofsomomentousanundertaking:Daviswiththeflatcheeksandcoldeyesofanascetic,histhinproudlipssetfirmly;Stephenswithdarkburningeyesdeepsocketedinafacethathadknownnothingbutsicknessandpainandhadtriumphedoverthemwithhumorandwithfiretwofacesthatweregreatlyloved.

           Theelderlyladiesofthecommitteeinwhosehandsrestedtheresponsibilityforthewholebazaarrustledinasimportantlyasfull-riggedships,hurriedthebelatedyoungmatronsandgigglinggirlsintotheirbooths,andthensweptthroughthedoorsintothebackroomswheretherefreshmentswerebeinglaidout.AuntPittypantedoutafterthem.

           Themusiciansclamberedupontheirplatform,black,grinning,theirfatcheeksalreadyshiningwithperspiration,andbegantuningtheirfiddlesandsawingandwhangingwiththeirbowsinanticipatoryimportance.OldLevi,Mrs.Merriwether’scoachman,whohadledtheorchestrasforeverybazaar,ballandweddingsinceAtlantawasnamedMarthasville,rappedwithhisbowforattention.Fewexcepttheladieswhowereconductingthebazaarhadarrivedyet,butalleyesturnedtowardhim.
