           Forthepastyear,shehadbeensoengrossedinherownwoes,soboredbyanymentionofwar,shedidnotknowthatfromtheminutethefightingfirstbegan,Atlantahadbeentransformed.Thesamerailroadswhichhadmadethetownthecrossroadsofcommerceintimeofpeacewerenowofvitalstrategicimportanceintimeofwar.Farfromthebattlelines,thetownanditsrailroadsprovidedtheconnectinglinkbetweenthetwoarmiesoftheConfederacy,thearmyinVirginiaandthearmyinTennesseeandtheWest.AndAtlantalikewiselinkedbothofthearmieswiththedeeperSouthfromwhichtheydrewtheirsupplies.Now,inresponsetotheneedsofwar,Atlantahadbecomeamanufacturingcenter,ahospitalbaseandoneoftheSouth’schiefdepotsforthecollectingoffoodandsuppliesforthearmiesinthefield.

           Scarlettlookedaboutherforthelittletownsherememberedsowell.Itwasgone.Thetownshewasnowseeingwaslikeababygrownovernightintoabusy,sprawlinggiant.

           Atlantawashumminglikeabeehive,proudlyconsciousofitsimportancetotheConfederacy,andworkwasgoingforwardnightanddaytowardturninganagriculturalsectionintoanindustrialone.Beforethewartherehadbeenfewcottonfactories,woolenmills,arsenalsandmachineshopssouthofMarylandafactofwhichallSouthernerswereproud.TheSouthproducedstatesmenandsoldiers,plantersanddoctors,lawyersandpoets,butcertainlynotengineersormechanics.LettheYankeesadoptsuchlowcallings.ButnowtheConfederateportswerestopperedwithYankeegunboats,onlyatrickleofblockade-rungoodswasslippinginfromEurope,andtheSouthwasdesperatelytryingtomanufactureherownwarmaterials.TheNorthcouldcallonthewholeworldforsuppliesandforsoldiers,andthousandsofIrishandGermanswerepouringintotheUnionArmy,luredbythebountymoneyofferedbytheNorth.TheSouthcouldonlyturninuponitself.
