           Alongtheroadsidetheblackberrybrambleswereconcealingwithsoftestgreenthesavageredgulchescutbythewinter’srains,andthebaregraniteboulderspushingupthroughtheredearthwerebeingdrapedwithspranglesofCherokeerosesandcompassedaboutbywildvioletsofpalestpurplehue.Uponthewoodedhillsabovetheriver,thedogwoodblossomslayglisteningandwhite,asifsnowstilllingeredamongthegreenery.Thefloweringcrabtreeswereburstingtheirbudsandriotingfromdelicatewhitetodeepestpinkand,beneaththetreeswherethesunshinedappledthepinestraw,thewildhoneysucklemadeavaricoloredcarpetofscarletandorangeandrose.Therewasafaintwildfragranceofsweetshrubonthebreezeandtheworldsmelledgoodenoughtoeat.

           "I’llrememberhowbeautifulthisdayistillIdie,"thoughtScarlett."Perhapsitwillbemyweddingday!"

           AndshethoughtwithatinglinginherhearthowsheandAshleymightrideswiftlythroughthisbeautyofblossomandgreenerythisveryafternoon,ortonightbymoonlight,towardJonesboroandapreacher.Ofcourse,shewouldhavetoberemarriedbyapriestfromAtlanta,butthatwouldbesomethingforEllenandGeraldtoworryabout.ShequailedalittleasshethoughthowwhitewithmortificationEllenwouldbeathearingthatherdaughterhadelopedwithanothergirl’sfiance,butsheknewEllenwouldforgiveherwhenshesawherhappiness.AndGeraldwouldscoldandbawlbut,forallhisremarksofyesterdayaboutnotwantinghertomarryAshley,hewouldbepleasedbeyondwordsatanalliancebetweenhisfamilyandtheWilkes.
