           KikiArudidn’tknowmuchaboutOzanddidn’tknowmuchaboutthebeastswholivedthere,buttheoldNome’splanseemedtohimtobequitereasonable.HehadafaintsuspicionthatRuggedomeanttogetthebestofhiminsomeway,andheresolvedtokeepaclosewatchonhisfellow-conspirator.Aslongashekepttohimselfthesecretwordofthetransformations,Ruggedowouldnotdaretoharmhim,andhepromisedhimselfthatassoonastheyhadconqueredOz,hewouldtransformtheoldNomeintoamarblestatueandkeephiminthatformforever.

           Ruggedo,onhispart,decidedthathecould,bycarefulwatchingandlistening,surprisetheboy’ssecret,andwhenhehadlearnedthemagicwordhewouldtransformKikiAruintoabundleoffaggotsandburnhimupandsoberidofhim.

           Thisisalwaysthewaywithwickedpeople.Theycannotbetrustedevenbyoneanother.RuggedothoughthewasfoolingKiki,andKikithoughthewasfoolingRuggedo;sobothwerepleased.
