Ruggedowonderedwherehehadgone,butstoodquietlyinhisplaceuntil,allofasudden,hisformchangedtothatofagreateagle,andheutteredapiercingcryofastonishmentandflappedhiswingsinasortofpanic.Atoncehiseaglecrywasansweredfrombeyondthegrove,andanothereagle,evenlargerandmorepowerfulthanthetransformedRuggedo,camesailingthroughthetreesandalightedbesidehim.
"Nowwearereadyforthestart,"saidthevoiceofKiki,comingfromtheeagle.
Ruggedorealizedthatthistimehehadbeenoutwitted.HehadthoughtKikiwouldutterthemagicwordinhispresence,andsohewouldlearnwhatitwas,buttheboyhadbeentooshrewdforthat.
AsthetwoeaglesmountedhighintotheairandbegantheirflightacrossthegreatDesertthatseparatestheLandofOzfromalltherestoftheworld,theNomesaid:
"WhenIwasKingoftheNomesIhadamagicwayofworkingtransformationsthatIthoughtwasgood,butitcouldnotcomparewithyoursecretword.IhadtohavecertaintoolsandmakepassesandsayalotofmysticwordsbeforeIcouldtransformanybody."
"Whatbecameofyourmagictools?"inquiredKiki.
"TheOzpeopletookthemallawayfromme—thathorridgirl,Dorothy,andthatterriblefairy,Ozma,theRulerofOz—atthetimetheytookawaymyundergroundkingdomandkickedmeupstairsintothecold,heartlessworld."
"Whydidyouletthemdothat?"askedtheboy.
"Well,"saidRuggedo,"Icouldn’thelpit.Theyrolledeggsatme—EGGS—dreadfuleggs!—andifaneggeventouchesaNome,heisruinedforlife
