ThatMr.Lerouxhasused,forthesceneofhisstory,theParisOperaHouseasitreallyisandhasnotcreatedabuildingoutofhisimagination,isshownbythisinterestingdescriptionofittakenfromanarticlewhichappearedinScribner’sMagazinein1879,ashorttimeafterthebuildingwascompleted:
"ThenewOperaHouse,commencedundertheEmpireandfinishedundertheRepublic,isthemostcompletebuildingofthekindintheworldandinmanyrespectsthemostbeautiful.NoEuropeancapitalpossessesanoperahousesocomprehensiveinplanandexecution,andnonecanboastanedificeequallyvastandsplendid.
"ThesiteoftheOperaHousewaschosenin1861.Itwasdeterminedtolaythefoundationexceptionallydeepandstrong.Itwaswellknownthatwaterwouldbemetwith,butitwasimpossibletoforeseeatwhatdepthorinwhatquantityitwouldbefound.Exceptionaldepthalsowasnecessary,asthestagearrangementsweretobesuchastoadmitascenefiftyfeethightobeloweredonitsframe.Itwasthereforenecessarytolayafoundationinasoilsoakedwithwaterwhichshouldbesufficientlysolidtosustainaweightof22,000,000pounds,andatthesametimetobeperfectlydry,asthecellarswereintendedforthestorageofsceneryandproperties.Whiletheworkwasinprogress,theexcavationwaskeptfreefromwaterbymeansofeightpumps,workedbysteampower,andinoperation,withoutinterruption,dayandnight,fromMarchsecondtoOctoberthirteenth.
