Themanagersdidnothesitate;withoutwastingtimeinaskinghowtheseconfoundedcommunicationscametobedeliveredinanofficewhichtheywerecarefultokeeplocked,theyseizedthisopportunityoflayinghands,onthemysteriousblackmailer.And,aftertellingthewholestory,underthepromiseofsecrecy,toGabrielandMercier,theyputthetwentythousandfrancsintotheenvelopeandwithoutaskingforexplanations,handedittoMme.
