Giry,whohadbeenreinstatedinherfunctions.Thebox-keeperdisplayednoastonishment.Ineedhardlysaythatshewaswellwatched.Shewentstraighttotheghost’sboxandplacedthepreciousenvelopeonthelittleshelfattachedtotheledge.Thetwomanagers,aswellasGabrielandMercier,werehiddeninsuchawaythattheydidnotlosesightoftheenvelopeforasecondduringtheperformanceandevenafterward,for,astheenvelopehadnotmoved,thosewhowatcheditdidnotmoveeither;andMme.Girywentawaywhilethemanagers,GabrielandMercierwerestillthere.Atlast,theybecametiredofwaitingandopenedtheenvelope,afterascertainingthatthesealshadnotbeenbroken.
Atfirstsight,RichardandMoncharminthoughtthatthenoteswerestillthere;butsoontheyperceivedthattheywerenotthesame.Thetwentyrealnotesweregoneandhadbeenreplacedbytwentynotes,ofthe"BankofSt.Farce"!
Themanagers’rageandfrightwereunmistakable.Moncharminwantedtosendforthecommissaryofpolice,butRichardobjected.Henodoubthadaplan,forhesaid:
