           Thefloorofthecellarwascoveredwithalayerofconcrete,thenwithtwocoatsofcement,anotherlayerofconcreteandacoatofbitumen.Thewallincludesanouterwallbuiltasacoffer-dam,abrickwall,acoatofcement,andawallproper,alittleoverayardthick.Afterallthiswasdonethewholewasfilledwithwater,inorderthatthefluid,bypenetratingintothemostminuteinterstices,mightdepositasedimentwhichwouldclosethemmoresurelyandperfectlythanitwouldbepossibletodobyhand.Twelveyearselapsedbeforethecompletionofthebuilding,andduringthattimeitwasdemonstratedthattheprecautionstakensecuredabsoluteimpermeabilityandsolidity.

           "ThefinestoneemployedintheconstructionwasbroughtfromquarriesinSweden,Scotland,Italy,Algeria,Finland,Spain,BelgiumandFrance.Whileworkontheexteriorwasinprogress,thebuildingwascoveredinbyawoodenshell,renderedtransparentbythousandsofsmallpanesofglass.In1867aswarmofmen,suppliedwithhammersandaxes,strippedthehouseofitshabit,andshowedinallitssplendorthegreatstructure.
