           Buttheythoughtthewantofmoralvirtueswassofarfrombeingsuppliedbysuperiorendowmentsofthemind,thatemploymentscouldneverbeputintosuchdangeroushandsasthoseofpersonssoqualified;and,atleast,thatthemistakescommittedbyignorance,inavirtuousdisposition,wouldneverbeofsuchfatalconsequencetothepublicweal,asthepracticesofaman,whoseinclinationsledhimtobecorrupt,andwhohadgreatabilitiestomanage,tomultiply,anddefendhiscorruptions.

           Inlikemanner,thedisbeliefofaDivineProvidencerendersamanincapableofholdinganypublicstation;for,sincekingsavowthemselvestobethedeputiesofProvidence,theLilliputiansthinknothingcanbemoreabsurdthanforaprincetoemploysuchmenasdisowntheauthorityunderwhichheacts.

           Inrelatingtheseandthefollowinglaws,Iwouldonlybeunderstoodtomeantheoriginalinstitutions,andnotthemostscandalouscorruptions,intowhichthesepeoplearefallenbythedegeneratenatureofman.For,astothatinfamouspracticeofacquiringgreatemploymentsbydancingontheropes,orbadgesoffavouranddistinctionbyleapingoversticksandcreepingunderthem,thereaderistoobserve,thattheywerefirstintroducedbythegrandfatheroftheemperornowreigning,andgrewtothepresentheightbythegradualincreaseofpartyandfaction.

           Ingratitudeisamongthemacapitalcrime,aswereadittohavebeeninsomeothercountries:fortheyreasonthus;thatwhoevermakesillreturnstohisbenefactor,mustneedsbeacommonenemytotherestofmankind,fromwhomhehasreceivednoobligation,andthereforesuchamanisnotfittolive.
