           Theirnotionsrelatingtothedutiesofparentsandchildrendifferextremelyfromours.For,sincetheconjunctionofmaleandfemaleisfoundeduponthegreatlawofnature,inordertopropagateandcontinuethespecies,theLilliputianswillneedshaveit,thatmenandwomenarejoinedtogether,likeotheranimals,bythemotivesofconcupiscence;andthattheirtendernesstowardstheiryoungproceedsfromthelikenaturalprinciple:forwhichreasontheywillneverallowthatachildisunderanyobligationtohisfatherforbegettinghim,ortohismotherforbringinghimintotheworld;which,consideringthemiseriesofhumanlife,wasneitherabenefitinitself,norintendedsobyhisparents,whosethoughts,intheirloveencounters,wereotherwiseemployed.Uponthese,andthelikereasonings,theiropinionis,thatparentsarethelastofallotherstobetrustedwiththeeducationoftheirownchildren;andthereforetheyhaveineverytownpublicnurseries,whereallparents,exceptcottagersandlabourers,areobligedtosendtheirinfantsofbothsexestoberearedandeducated,whentheycometotheageoftwentymoons,atwhichtimetheyaresupposedtohavesomerudimentsofdocility.Theseschoolsareofseveralkinds,suitedtodifferentqualities,andbothsexes.Theyhavecertainprofessorswellskilledinpreparingchildrenforsuchaconditionoflifeasbefitstherankoftheirparents,andtheirowncapacities,aswellasinclinations.Ishallfirstsaysomethingofthemalenurseries,andthenofthefemale.

           Thenurseriesformalesofnobleoreminentbirth,areprovidedwithgraveandlearnedprofessors,andtheirseveraldeputies.Theclothesandfoodofthechildrenareplainandsimple.Theyarebredupintheprinciplesofhonour,justice,courage,modesty,clemency,religion,andloveoftheircountry;theyarealwaysemployedinsomebusiness,exceptinthetimesofeatingandsleeping,whichareveryshort,andtwohoursfordiversionsconsistingofbodilyexercises.
