Icontinuedathomewithmywifeandchildrenaboutfivemonths,inaveryhappycondition,ifIcouldhavelearnedthelessonofknowingwhenIwaswell.Ileftmypoorwifebigwithchild,andacceptedanadvantageousoffermademetobecaptainoftheAdventurer,astoutmerchantmanof350tons:forIunderstoodnavigationwell,andbeinggrownwearyofasurgeon’semploymentatsea,which,however,Icouldexerciseuponoccasion,Itookaskilfulyoungmanofthatcalling,oneRobertPurefoy,intomyship.WesetsailfromPortsmouthuponthe7thdayofSeptember,1710;onthe14thwemetwithCaptainPocock,ofBristol,atTeneriffe,whowasgoingtothebayofCampechytocutlogwood.Onthe16th,hewaspartedfromusbyastorm;Iheardsincemyreturn,thathisshipfoundered,andnoneescapedbutonecabinboy.Hewasanhonestman,andagoodsailor,butalittletoopositiveinhisownopinions,whichwasthecauseofhisdestruction,asithasbeenwithseveralothers;forifhehadfollowedmyadvice,hemighthavebeensafeathomewithhisfamilyatthistime,aswellasmyself.
Ihadseveralmenwhodiedinmyshipofcalentures,sothatIwasforcedtogetrecruitsoutofBarbadoesandtheLeewardIslands,whereItouched,bythedirectionofthemerchantswhoemployedme;whichIhadsoontoomuchcausetorepent:forIfoundafterwards,thatmostofthemhadbeenbuccaneers.Ihadfiftyhandsonboard;andmyorderswere,thatIshouldtradewiththeIndiansintheSouth-Sea,andmakewhatdiscoveriesIcould.
