           ThesecondweekinLent,histurncametotakethesacramentwithhisgang.Hewenttochurchandprayedwiththeothers.Aquarrelbrokeoutoneday,hedidnotknowhow.Allfellonhimatonceinafury.

           “You’reaninfidel!Youdon’tbelieveinGod,”theyshouted.“Yououghttobekilled.”

           HehadnevertalkedtothemaboutGodnorhisbelief,buttheywantedtokillhimasaninfidel.Hesaidnothing.Oneoftheprisonersrushedathiminaperfectfrenzy.Raskolnikovawaitedhimcalmlyandsilently;hiseyebrowsdidnotquiver,hisfacedidnotflinch.Theguardsucceededininterveningbetweenhimandhisassailant,ortherewouldhavebeenbloodshed.
