Allthestrangeandpeculiarcircumstancesofthecrimeweretakenintoconsideration.Therecouldbenodoubtoftheabnormalandpoverty-strickenconditionofthecriminalatthetime.Thefactthathehadmadenouseofwhathehadstolenwasputdownpartlytotheeffectofremorse,partlytohisabnormalmentalconditionatthetimeofthecrime.IncidentallythemurderofLizavetaservedindeedtoconfirmthelasthypothesis:amancommitstwomurdersandforgetsthatthedoorisopen!Finally,theconfession,attheverymomentwhenthecasewashopelesslymuddledbythefalseevidencegivenbyNikolaythroughmelancholyandfanaticism,andwhen,moreover,therewerenoproofsagainsttherealcriminal,nosuspicionseven(PorfiryPetrovitchfullykepthisword)—allthisdidmuchtosoftenthesentence.Othercircumstances,too,intheprisoner’sfavourcameoutquiteunexpectedly.RazumihinsomehowdiscoveredandprovedthatwhileRaskolnikovwasattheuniversityhehadhelpedapoorconsumptivefellowstudentandhadspenthislastpennyonsupportinghimforsixmonths,andwhenthisstudentdied,leavingadecrepitoldfatherwhomhehadmaintainedalmostfromhisthirteenthyear,Raskolnikovhadgottheoldmanintoahospitalandpaidforhisfuneralwhenhedied.Raskolnikov’slandladyborewitness,too,thatwhentheyhadlivedinanotherhouseatFiveCorners,Raskolnikovhadrescuedtwolittlechildrenfromahouseonfireandwasburntindoingso.Thiswasinvestigatedandfairlywellconfirmedbymanywitnesses.
