           Hewalkedforsometimethroughalongnarrowcorridorwithoutfindinganyoneandwasjustgoingtocallout,whensuddenlyinadarkcornerbetweenanoldcupboardandthedoorhecaughtsightofastrangeobjectwhichseemedtobealive.Hebentdownwiththecandleandsawalittlegirl,notmorethanfiveyearsold,shiveringandcrying,withherclothesaswetasasoakinghouse-flannel.ShedidnotseemafraidofSvidrigaïlov,butlookedathimwithblankamazementoutofherbigblackeyes.Nowandthenshesobbedaschildrendowhentheyhavebeencryingalongtime,butarebeginningtobecomforted.Thechild’sfacewaspaleandtired,shewasnumbwithcold.“Howcanshehavecomehere?Shemusthavehiddenhereandnotsleptallnight.”Hebeganquestioningher.Thechildsuddenlybecominganimated,chatteredawayinherbabylanguage,somethingabout“mammy”andthat“mammywouldbeather,”andaboutsomecupthatshehad“bwoken.”Thechildchatteredonwithoutstopping.Hecouldonlyguessfromwhatshesaidthatshewasaneglectedchild,whosemother,probablyadrunkencook,intheserviceofthehotel,whippedandfrightenedher;thatthechildhadbrokenacupofhermother’sandwassofrightenedthatshehadrunawaytheeveningbefore,hadhiddenforalongwhilesomewhereoutsideintherain,atlasthadmadeherwayinhere,hiddenbehindthecupboardandspentthenightthere,cryingandtremblingfromthedamp,thedarknessandthefearthatshewouldbebadlybeatenforit.
