           Hewasaclerkandhadalmostalwayssomethingwrongwithhiseyes.Hewasrathersoft-hearted,butself-confidentandsometimesextremelyconceitedinspeech,whichhadanabsurdeffect,incongruouswithhislittlefigure.HewasoneofthelodgersmostrespectedbyAmaliaIvanovna,forhedidnotgetdrunkandpaidregularlyforhislodgings.AndreySemyonovitchreallywasratherstupid;heattachedhimselftothecauseofprogressand“ouryoungergeneration”fromenthusiasm.Hewasoneofthenumerousandvariedlegionofdullards,ofhalf-animateabortions,conceited,half-educatedcoxcombs,whoattachthemselvestotheideamostinfashiononlytovulgariseitandwhocaricatureeverycausetheyserve,howeversincerely.

           ThoughLebeziatnikovwassogood-natured,he,too,wasbeginningtodislikePyotrPetrovitch.Thishappenedonbothsidesunconsciously.HoweversimpleAndreySemyonovitchmightbe,hebegantoseethatPyotrPetrovitchwasdupinghimandsecretlydespisinghim,andthat“hewasnottherightsortofman.”HehadtriedexpoundingtohimthesystemofFourierandtheDarwiniantheory,butoflatePyotrPetrovitchbegantolistentoosarcasticallyandeventoberude.ThefactwashehadbeguninstinctivelytoguessthatLebeziatnikovwasnotmerelyacommonplacesimpleton,but,perhaps,aliar,too,andthathehadnoconnectionsofanyconsequenceeveninhisowncircle,buthadsimplypickedthingsupthird-hand;andthatverylikelyhedidnotevenknowmuchabouthisownworkofpropaganda,forhewasintoogreatamuddle.
