Tess,havingquicklyeatenherownmeal,beckonedtohereldestsistertocomeandtakeawaythebaby,fastenedherdress,putonthebuffglovesagain,andstoopedanewtodrawabondfromthelastcompletedsheafforthetyingofthenext.
Intheafternoonandeveningtheproceedingsofthemorningwerecontinued,Tessstayingontillduskwiththebodyofharvesters.Thentheyallrodehomeinoneofthelargestwagons,inthecompanyofabroadtarnishedmoonthathadrisenfromthegroundtotheeastwards,itsfaceresemblingtheoutworngold-leafhaloofsomeworm-eatenTuscansaint.Tess’sfemalecompanionssangsongs,andshowedthemselvesverysympatheticandgladatherreappearanceoutofdoors,thoughtheycouldnotrefrainfrommischievouslythrowinginafewversesoftheballadaboutthemaidwhowenttothemerrygreenwoodandcamebackachangedstate.Therearecounterpoisesandcompensationsinlife;andtheeventwhichhadmadeofherasocialwarninghadalsoforthemomentmadeherthemostinterestingpersonageinthevillagetomany.Theirfriendlinesswonherstillfartherawayfromherself,theirlivelyspiritswerecontagious,andshebecamealmostgay.
