ThehotweatherofJulyhadcreptuponthemunawares,andtheatmosphereoftheflatvalehungheavyasanopiateoverthedairy-folk,thecows,andthetrees.Hotsteamingrainsfellfrequently,makingthegrasswherethecowsfedyetmorerank,andhinderingthelatehaymakingintheothermeads.
ItwasSundaymorning;themilkingwasdone;theoutdoormilkershadgonehome.Tessandtheotherthreeweredressingthemselvesrapidly,thewholebevyhavingagreedtogotogethertoMellstockChurch,whichlaysomethreeorfourmilesdistantfromthedairy-house.ShehadnowbeentwomonthsatTalbothays,andthiswasherfirstexcursion.
Alltheprecedingafternoonandnightheavythunderstormshadhisseddownuponthemeads,andwashedsomeofthehayintotheriver;butthismorningthesunshoneoutallthemorebrilliantlyforthedeluge,andtheairwasbalmyandclear.
ThecrookedlaneleadingfromtheirownparrishtoMellstockranalongthelowestlevelsinaportionofitslength,andwhenthegirlsreachedthemostdepressedspottheyfoundthattheresultoftherainhadbeentofloodthelaneover-shoetoadistanceofsomefiftyyards.
