           Thebasketwasheavyandthebundlewaslarge,butsheluggedthemalonglikeapersonwhodidnotfindherespecialburdeninmaterialthings.Occasionallyshestoppedtorestinamechanicalwaybysomegateorpost;andthen,givingthebaggageanotherhitchuponherfullroundarm,wentsteadilyonagain.

           ItwasaSundaymorninginlateOctober,aboutfourmonthsafterTessDurbeyfield’sarrivalatTrantridge,andsomefewweekssubsequenttothenightrideinTheChase.Thetimewasnotlongpastdaybreak,andtheyellowluminosityuponthehorizonbehindherbacklightedtheridgetowardswhichherfacewassetthebarrierofthevalewhereinshehadoflatebeenastrangerwhichshewouldhavetoclimbovertoreachherbirthplace.Theascentwasgradualonthisside,andthesoilandscenerydifferedmuchfromthosewithinBlackmoreVale.Eventhecharacterandaccentofthetwopeopleshadshadesofdifference,despitetheamalgamatingeffectsofaroundaboutrailway;sothat,thoughlessthantwentymilesfromtheplaceofhersojournatTrantridge,hernativevillagehadseemedafar-awayspot.Thefield-folkshutintheretradednorthwardandwestward,travelled,courted,andmarriednorthwardandwestward,thoughtnorthwardandwestward;thoseonthissidemainlydirectedtheirenergiesandattentiontotheeastandsouth.
