           ThisfamiliarthatIcalledoutofmyownsoul,andsentforthalonetodohisgoodpleasure,wasabeinginherentlymalignandvillainous;hiseveryactandthoughtcentredonself;drinkingpleasurewithbestialavidityfromanydegreeoftorturetoanother;relentlesslikeamanofstone. HenryJekyllstoodattimesaghastbeforetheactsofEdwardHyde;butthesituationwasapartfromordinarylaws,andinsidiouslyrelaxedthegraspofconscience. ItwasHyde,afterall,andHydealone,thatwasguilty. Jekyllwasnoworse;hewokeagaintohisgoodqualitiesseeminglyunimpaired; hewouldevenmakehaste,whereitwaspossible,toundotheevildonebyHyde. Andthushisconscienceslumbered.
