SometwomonthsbeforethemurderofSirDanvers,Ihadbeenoutforoneofmyadventures,hadreturnedatalatehour,andwokethenextdayinbedwithsomewhatoddsensations. ItwasinvainIlookedaboutme;invainIsawthedecentfurnitureandtallproportionsofmyroominthesquare; invainthatIrecognisedthepatternofthebed-curtainsandthedesignofthemahoganyframe;somethingstillkeptinsistingthatIwasnotwhereIwas,thatIhadnotwakenedwhereIseemedtobe,butinthelittleroominSohowhereIwasaccustomedtosleepinthebodyofEdwardHyde. Ismiledtomyself,and,inmypsychologicalwaybeganlazilytoinquireintotheelementsofthisillusion,occasionally,evenasIdidso,droppingbackintoacomfortablemorningdoze. Iwasstillsoengagedwhen,inoneofmymorewakefulmoments,myeyesfelluponmyhand. NowthehandofHenryJekyll(asyouhaveoftenremarked)wasprofessionalinshapeandsize:itwaslarge,firm,white,andcomely. ButthehandwhichInowsaw,clearlyenough,intheyellowlightofamid-Londonmorning,lyinghalfshutonthebed-clothes,waslean,corded,knuckly,ofaduskypallorandthicklyshadedwithaswartgrowthofhair. ItwasthehandofEdwardHyde.
