Iwasagooddealsurprisedbythis;forwewerebynomeansinthehabitofcorrespondence;Ihadseentheman,dinedwithhim,indeed,thenightbefore;andIcouldimaginenothinginourintercoursethatshouldjustifyformalityofregistration. “DearLanyon,Youareoneofmyoldestfriends;andalthoughwemayhavedifferedattimesonscientificquestions,Icannotremember,atleastonmyside,anybreakinouraffection. Therewasneveradaywhen,ifyouhadsaidtome, ‘Jekyll,mylife,myhonour,myreason,dependuponyou,’Iwouldnothavesacrificedmylefthandtohelpyou.
