Iwasthefirstthatcouldthusplodinthepubliceyewithaloadofgenialrespectability,andinamoment,likeaschoolboy,stripofftheselendingsandspringheadlongintotheseaofliberty. Butforme,inmyimpenetrablemantle,thesafetywascomplete. Thinkofit—Ididnotevenexist! Letmebutescapeintomylaboratorydoor,givemebutasecondortwotomixandswallowthedraughtthatIhadalwaysstandingready;andwhateverhehaddone,EdwardHydewouldpassawaylikethestainofbreathuponamirror; andthereinhisstead,quietlyathome,trimmingthemidnightlampinhisstudy,amanwhocouldaffordtolaughatsuspicion,wouldbeHenryJekyll.
ThepleasureswhichImadehastetoseekinmydisguisewere,asIhavesaid,undignified;Iwouldscarceuseaharderterm. ButinthehandsofEdwardHyde,theysoonbegantoturntowardthemonstrous. WhenIwouldcomebackfromtheseexcursions,Iwasoftenplungedintoakindofwonderatmyvicariousdepravity.
