Underthestrainofthiscontinually-impendingdoomandbythesleeplessnesstowhichInowcondemnedmyself,ay,evenbeyondwhatIhadthoughtpossibletoman, Ibecame,inmyownperson,acreatureeatenupandemptiedbyfever,languidlyweakbothinbodyandmind,andsolelyoccupiedbyonethought:thehorrorofmyotherself. ButwhenIslept,orwhenthevirtueofthemedicineworeoff,Iwouldleapalmostwithouttransition(forthepangsoftransformationgrewdailylessmarked)intothepossessionofafancybrimmingwithimagesofterror,asoulboilingwithcauselesshatreds,andabodythatseemednotstrongenoughtocontaintheragingenergiesoflife. ThepowersofHydeseemedtohavegrownwiththesicklinessofJekyll. Andcertainlythehatethatnowdividedthemwasequaloneachside. WithJekyll,itwasathingofvitalinstinct.
