Andthisagain,thatthatinsurgenthorrorwasknittohimcloserthanawife,closerthananeye;laycagedinhisflesh,wherehehearditmutterandfeltitstruggletobeborn;andateveryhourofweakness,andintheconfidenceofslumber,prevailedagainsthimanddeposedhimoutoflife. ThehatredofHydeforJekyll,wasofadifferentorder. Histerrorofthegallowsdrovehimcontinuallytocommittemporarysuicide,andreturntohissubordinatestationofapartinsteadofaperson; butheloathedthenecessity,heloathedthedespondencyintowhichJekyllwasnowfallen,andheresentedthedislikewithwhichhewashimselfregarded. Hencetheape-liketricksthathewouldplayme,scrawlinginmyownhandblasphemiesonthepagesofmybooks,burningthelettersanddestroyingtheportraitofmyfather;andindeed,haditnotbeenforhisfearofdeath,hewouldlongagohaveruinedhimselfinordertoinvolvemeintheruin.
