Inthesecondplace,itsohappenedthatbecauseofthisswellingtideofmunicipalenthusiasm,thisrenaissanceoftheWest,Chicagohadfinallybeenchosen,atadateshortlyprecedingthepresentcampaign,asthefavoredcityforanenormousinternationalfair—quitethelargestevergiveninAmerica.MensuchasHand,Schryhart,Merrill,andArneel,tosaynothingofthevariousnewspaperpublishersandeditors,hadbeenenthusiasticsupportersoftheproject,andinthisCowperwoodhadbeenonewiththem.Nosooner,however,hadtheawardactuallybeengrantedthanCowperwood’senemiesmadeittheirfirstconcerntoutilizethesituationagainsthim.
Tobeginwith,thesiteofthefair,byaidofthenewanti-Cowperwoodcouncil,waslocatedontheSouthSide,attheterminusoftheSchryhartline,thusmakingthewholecitypaytributetothatcorporation.SimultaneouslythethoughtsuddenlydawnedupontheSchryhartfactionthatitwouldbeanexcellentstrokeofbusinessiftheNewYorkelevated-roadideawerenowintroducedintothecity—notsomuchwiththepurposeofmakingmoneyimmediately,butinordertobringthehatedmagnatetoanunderstandingthathehadaformidablerivalwhichmightinvadetheterritorythathenowmonopolized,curtailinghisandthusmakingitadvisableforhimtocloseouthisholdingsanddepart.BlandandinterestingweretheconferencesheldbyMr.SchryhartwithMr.Hand,andbyMr.HandwithMr.Arneelonthissubject.
