ButtherefollowedswiftlythesixthofNovember,withitselection,noisyandirrational,andthelatterresultedinaresoundingdefeat.Outofthethirty-twoDemocraticaldermennominatedonlytenwereelected,givingtheoppositionafulltwo-thirdsmajorityincouncil,Messrs.TiernanandKerrigan,ofcourse,beingsafelyintheirplaces.WiththemcameaRepublicanmayorandallhisRepublicanassociatesontheticket,whowerenowsupposedtocarryoutthetheoriesoftherespectableandthevirtuous.Cowperwoodknewwhatitmeantandpreparedatoncetomakeoverturestotheenemy.
