MydearSister,
IwriteafewlinesinhastetosaythatIamsafe—andwelladvancedonmyvoyage. ThisletterwillreachEnglandbyamerchantmannowonitshomewardvoyagefromArchangel; morefortunatethanI,whomaynotseemynativeland,perhaps,formanyyears. Iam,however,ingoodspirits: mymenareboldandapparentlyfirmofpurpose,nordothefloatingsheetsoficethatcontinuallypassus,indicatingthedangersoftheregiontowardswhichweareadvancing,appeartodismaythem. Wehavealreadyreachedaveryhighlatitude; butitistheheightofsummer,andalthoughnotsowarmasinEngland,thesoutherngales,whichblowusspeedilytowardsthoseshoreswhichIsoardentlydesiretoattain,breatheadegreeofrenovatingwarmthwhichIhadnotexpected.
Noincidentshavehithertobefallenusthatwouldmakeafigureinaletter. Oneortwostiffgalesandthespringingofaleakareaccidentswhichexperiencednavigatorsscarcelyremembertorecord,andIshallbewellcontentifnothingworsehappentousduringourvoyage.
