ButIhaveonewantwhichIhaveneveryetbeenabletosatisfy,andtheabsenceoftheobjectofwhichInowfeelasamostsevereevil. Ihavenofriend,Margaret: whenIamglowingwiththeenthusiasmofsuccess,therewillbenonetoparticipatemyjoy; ifIamassailedbydisappointment,noonewillendeavourtosustainmeindejection. Ishallcommitmythoughtstopaper,itistrue; butthatisapoormediumforthecommunicationoffeeling. Idesirethecompanyofamanwhocouldsympathizewithme,whoseeyeswouldreplytomine. Youmaydeemmeromantic,mydearsister,butIbitterlyfeelthewantofafriend. Ihavenoonenearme,gentleyetcourageous,possessedofacultivatedaswellasofacapaciousmind,whosetastesarelikemyown,toapproveoramendmyplans. Howwouldsuchafriendrepairthefaultsofyourpoorbrother! Iamtooardentinexecutionandtooimpatientofdifficulties. ButitisastillgreatereviltomethatIamself-educated: forthefirstfourteenyearsofmylifeIranwildonacommonandreadnothingbutourUncleThomas’booksofvoyages. AtthatageIbecameacquaintedwiththecelebratedpoetsofourowncountry; butitwasonlywhenithadceasedtobeinmypowertoderiveitsmostimportantbenefitsfromsuchaconvictionthatIperceivedthenecessityofbecomingacquaintedwithmorelanguagesthanthatofmynativecountry.
