           "Havingthusarrangedmydwellingandcarpeteditwithcleanstraw,Iretired,forIsawthefigureofamanatadistance,andIrememberedtoowellmytreatmentthenightbeforetotrustmyselfinhispower.Ihadfirst,however,providedformysustenanceforthatdaybyaloafofcoarsebread,whichIpurloined,andacupwithwhichIcoulddrinkmoreconvenientlythanfrommyhandofthepurewaterwhichflowedbymyretreat.Thefloorwasalittleraised,sothatitwaskeptperfectlydry,andbyitsvicinitytothechimneyofthecottageitwastolerablywarm.

           "Beingthusprovided,Iresolvedtoresideinthishoveluntilsomethingshouldoccurwhichmightaltermydetermination.Itwasindeedaparadisecomparedtothebleakforest,myformerresidence,therain-droppingbranches,anddankearth.IatemybreakfastwithpleasureandwasabouttoremoveaplanktoprocuremyselfalittlewaterwhenIheardastep,andlookingthroughasmallchink,Ibeheldayoungcreature,withapailonherhead,passingbeforemyhovel.Thegirlwasyoungandofgentledemeanour,unlikewhatIhavesincefoundcottagersandfarmhouseservantstobe.Yetshewasmeanlydressed,acoarsebluepetticoatandalinenjacketbeingheronlygarb;herfairhairwasplaitedbutnotadorned:shelookedpatientyetsad.Ilostsightofher,andinaboutaquarterofanhourshereturnedbearingthepail,whichwasnowpartlyfilledwithmilk.Asshewalkedalong,seeminglyincommodedbytheburden,ayoungmanmether,whosecountenanceexpressedadeeperdespondence.Utteringafewsoundswithanairofmelancholy,hetookthepailfromherheadandboreittothecottagehimself.Shefollowed,andtheydisappeared.PresentlyIsawtheyoungmanagain,withsometoolsinhishand,crossthefieldbehindthecottage;andthegirlwasalsobusied,sometimesinthehouseandsometimesintheyard."Onexaminingmydwelling,Ifoundthatoneofthewindowsofthecottagehadformerlyoccupiedapartofit,butthepaneshadbeenfilledupwithwood.
