           Sheclosedthedoor,leavingmesoluswithMr.St.John,whosatopposite,abookornewspaperinhishand.Iexaminedfirst,theparlour,andthenitsoccupant. 

           Theparlourwasratherasmallroom,veryplainlyfurnished,yetcomfortable,becausecleanandneat. Theold-fashionedchairswereverybright,andthewalnut-woodtablewaslikealooking-glass. Afewstrange,antiqueportraitsofthemenandwomenofotherdaysdecoratedthestainedwalls;acupboardwithglassdoorscontainedsomebooksandanancientsetofchina. Therewasnosuperfluousornamentintheroomnotonemodernpieceoffurniture,saveabraceofworkboxesandalady’sdeskinrosewood,whichstoodonaside-table:everythingincludingthecarpetandcurtainslookedatoncewellwornandwellsaved. 

           Mr.St.Johnsittingasstillasoneofthedustypicturesonthewalls,keepinghiseyesfixedonthepageheperused,andhislipsmutelysealedwaseasyenoughtoexamine. Hadhebeenastatueinsteadofaman,hecouldnothavebeeneasier.
