           AninaudiblereplyescapedMason’swhitelips. 

           "Thedevilisinitifyoucannotanswerdistinctly.Iagaindemand,whathaveyoutosay?" 

           "Sir—sir,"interruptedtheclergyman,"donotforgetyouareinasacredplace."ThenaddressingMason,heinquiredgently,"Areyouaware,sir,whetherornotthisgentleman’swifeisstillliving?" 

           "Courage,"urgedthelawyer,—"speakout." 

           "SheisnowlivingatThornfieldHall,"saidMason,inmorearticulatetones:"IsawhertherelastApril.Iamherbrother." 

           "AtThornfieldHall!"ejaculatedtheclergyman."Impossible!Iamanoldresidentinthisneighbourhood,sir,andIneverheardofaMrs.RochesteratThornfieldHall." 

           IsawagrimsmilecontortMr.Rochester’slips,andhemuttered— 

           "No,byGod!Itookcarethatnoneshouldhearofit—orofherunderthatname."
