OnemorningIfelltosketchingaface:whatsortofafaceitwastobe,Ididnotcareorknow. Itookasoftblackpencil,gaveitabroadpoint,andworkedaway. SoonIhadtracedonthepaperabroadandprominentforeheadandasquareloweroutlineofvisage:thatcontourgavemepleasure;myfingersproceededactivelytofillitwithfeatures. Strongly-markedhorizontaleyebrowsmustbetracedunderthatbrow;thenfollowed,naturally,awell-definednose,withastraightridgeandfullnostrils; thenaflexible-lookingmouth,bynomeansnarrow;thenafirmchin,withadecidedcleftdownthemiddleofit:ofcourse,someblackwhiskerswerewanted,andsomejettyhair,tuftedonthetemples,andwavedabovetheforehead. Nowfortheeyes:Ihadleftthemtothelast,becausetheyrequiredthemostcarefulworking. Idrewthemlarge;Ishapedthemwell:theeyelashesItracedlongandsombre;theiridslustrousandlarge.
