Thehall,too,wasscoured;andthegreatcarvedclock,aswellasthestepsandbanistersofthestaircase,werepolishedtothebrightnessofglass;inthedining-room,thesideboardflashedresplendentwithplate;inthedrawing-roomandboudoir,vasesofexoticsbloomedonallsides.
Afternoonarrived:Mrs.Fairfaxassumedherbestblacksatingown,hergloves,andhergoldwatch;foritwasherparttoreceivethecompany,—toconducttheladiestotheirrooms,etc. Adele,too,wouldbedressed:thoughIthoughtshehadlittlechanceofbeingintroducedtothepartythatdayatleast.
