Twowaxcandlesstoodlightedonthetable,andtwoonthemantelpiece; baskinginthelightandheatofasuperbfire,layPilot—Adelekneltnearhim. HalfreclinedonacouchappearedMr.Rochester,hisfootsupportedbythecushion;hewaslookingatAdeleandthedog:thefireshonefullonhisface. Iknewmytravellerwithhisbroadandjettyeyebrows;hissquareforehead,madesquarerbythehorizontalsweepofhisblackhair. Irecognisedhisdecisivenose,moreremarkableforcharacterthanbeauty;hisfullnostrils,denoting,Ithought,choler;hisgrimmouth,chin,andjaw—yes,allthreewereverygrim,andnomistake. Hisshape,nowdivestedofcloak,Iperceivedharmonisedinsquarenesswithhisphysiognomy:Isupposeitwasagoodfigureintheathleticsenseoftheterm—broadchestedandthinflanked,thoughneithertallnorgraceful.
Mr.RochestermusthavebeenawareoftheentranceofMrs.Fairfaxandmyself;butitappearedhewasnotinthemoodtonoticeus,forheneverliftedhisheadasweapproached.
