           Itwasverynear,butnotyetinsight;when,inadditiontothetramp,tramp,Iheardarushunderthehedge,andclosedownbythehazelstemsglidedagreatdog,whoseblackandwhitecolourmadehimadistinctobjectagainstthetrees. ItwasexactlyoneformofBessie’sGytrashalion-likecreaturewithlonghairandahugehead:itpassedme,however,quietlyenough;notstayingtolookup,withstrangepretercanineeyes,inmyface,asIhalfexpecteditwould.Thehorsefollowed,atallsteed,andonitsbackarider. Theman,thehumanbeing,brokethespellatonce. NothingeverrodetheGytrash:itwasalwaysalone;andgoblins,tomynotions,thoughtheymighttenantthedumbcarcassesofbeasts,couldscarcecovetshelterinthecommonplacehumanform. NoGytrashwasthis,onlyatravellertakingtheshortcuttoMillcote. Hepassed,andIwenton;afewsteps,andIturned:aslidingsoundandanexclamationof"Whatthedeuceistodonow?"andaclatteringtumble,arrestedmyattention. Manandhorseweredown;theyhadslippedonthesheetoficewhichglazedthecauseway.
