Iwasconfirmedinthisideabythefactofheronceortwicecomingdownstairsonverywarmsunnyafternoons,andbeingtakenbyMissTempleintothegarden; but,ontheseoccasions,Iwasnotallowedtogoandspeaktoher;Ionlysawherfromtheschoolroomwindow,andthennotdistinctly;forshewasmuchwrappedup,andsatatadistanceundertheverandah.
Oneevening,inthebeginningofJune,IhadstayedoutverylatewithMaryAnninthewood;wehad,asusual,separatedourselvesfromtheothers,andhadwanderedfar;sofarthatwelostourway,andhadtoaskitatalonelycottage,whereamanandwomanlived,wholookedafteraherdofhalf-wildswinethatfedonthemastinthewood. Whenwegotback,itwasaftermoonrise:apony,whichweknewtobethesurgeon’s,wasstandingatthegardendoor. MaryAnnremarkedthatshesupposedsomeonemustbeveryill,asMr.Bateshadbeensentforatthattimeoftheevening.
