           "Harry,"saidBasilHallward,lookinghimstraightintheface, "everyportraitthatispaintedwithfeelingisaportraitoftheartist,notofthesitter. Thesitterismerelytheaccident,theoccasion.Itisnothewhoisrevealedbythepainter;itisratherthepainterwho,onthecolouredcanvas,revealshimself. ThereasonIwillnotexhibitthispictureisthatIamafraidthatIhaveshowninitthesecretofmyownsoul."

           LordHenrysmiled,and,leaningdown,pluckedapink-petalleddaisyfromthegrass,andexaminedit.
