Yetthesewhisperedscandalsonlyincreased,intheeyesofmany,hisstrangeanddangerouscharm. Hisgreatwealthwasacertainelementofsecurity. Society,civilisedsocietyatleast,isneververyreadytobelieveanythingtothedetrimentofthosewhoarebothrichandfascinating. Itfeelsinstinctivelythatmannersareofmoreimportancethanmorals,and,initsopinion,thehighestrespectabilityisofmuchlessvaluethanthepossessionofagoodchef. And,afterall,itisaverypoorconsolationtobetoldthatthemanwhohasgivenoneabaddinner,orpoorwine,isirreproachableinhisprivatelife. Eventhecardinalvirtuescannotatoneforhalf-coldentrées,asLordHenryremarkedonce,inadiscussiononthesubject;andthereispossiblyagooddealtobesaidforhisview. Forthecanonsofgoodsocietyare,orshouldbe,thesameasthecanonsofart. Formisabsolutelyessentialtoit. Itshouldhavethedignityofaceremony,aswellasitsunreality,andshouldcombinetheinsincerecharacterofaromanticplaywiththewitandbeautythatmakesuchplaysdelightfultous. Isinsinceritysuchaterriblething?
