CalebGarthhadundertakenit,hadfailedduringitsprogress,andbeforetheinteriorfittingswerebegunhadretiredfromthemanagementofthebusiness;andwhenreferringtotheHospitalheoftensaidthathoweverBulstrodemightringifyoutriedhim,helikedgoodsolidcarpentryandmasonry,andhadanotionbothofdrainsandchimneys.Infact,theHospitalhadbecomeanobjectofintenseinteresttoBulstrode,andhewouldwillinglyhavecontinuedtosparealargeyearlysumthathemightruleitdictatoriallywithoutanyBoard;buthehadanotherfavoriteobjectwhichalsorequiredmoneyforitsaccomplishment:hewishedtobaysomelandintheneighborhoodofMiddlemarch,andthereforehewishedtogetconsiderablecontributionstowardsmaintainingtheHospital.Meanwhileheframedhisplanofmanagement.TheHospitalwastobereservedforfeverinallitsforms;Lydgatewastobechiefmedicalsuperintendent,thathemighthavefreeauthoritytopursueallcomparativeinvestigationswhichhisstudies,particularlyinParis,hadshownhimtheimportanceof,theothermedicalvisitorshavingaconsultativeinfluence,butnopowertocontraveneLydgate’sultimatedecisions;andthegeneralmanagementwastobelodgedexclusivelyinthehandsoffivedirectorsassociatedwithMr.Bulstrode,whoweretohavevotesintheratiooftheircontributions,theBoarditselffillingupanyvacancyinitsnumbers,andnomobofsmallcontributorsbeingadmittedtoashareofgovernment.
