           Exilesnotoriouslyfeedmuchonhopes,andareunlikelytostayinbanishmentunlesstheyareobliged.WhenWillLadislawexiledhimselffromMiddlemarchhehadplacednostrongerobstacletohisreturnthanhisownresolve,whichwasbynomeansanironbarrier,butsimplyastateofmindliabletomeltintoaminuetwithotherstatesofmind,andtofinditselfbowing,smiling,andgivingplacewithpolitefacility.Asthemonthswenton,ithadseemedmoreandmoredifficulttohimtosaywhyheshouldnotrundowntoMiddlemarchmerelyforthesakeofhearingsomethingaboutDorothea;andifonsuchaflyingvisitheshouldchancebysomestrangecoincidencetomeetwithher,therewasnoreasonforhimtobeashamedofhavingtakenaninnocentjourneywhichhehadbeforehandsupposedthatheshouldnottake.Sincehewashopelesslydividedfromher,hemightsurelyventureintoherneighborhood;andastothesuspiciousfriendswhokeptadragonwatchoverhertheiropinionsseemedlessandlessimportantwithtimeandchangeofair.

           AndtherehadcomeareasonquiteirrespectiveofDorothea,whichseemedtomakeajourneytoMiddlemarchasortofphilanthropicduty.
