Exilesnotoriouslyfeedmuchonhopes,andareunlikelytostayinbanishmentunlesstheyareobliged.WhenWillLadislawexiledhimselffromMiddlemarchhehadplacednostrongerobstacletohisreturnthanhisownresolve,whichwasbynomeansanironbarrier,butsimplyastateofmindliabletomeltintoaminuetwithotherstatesofmind,andtofinditselfbowing,smiling,andgivingplacewithpolitefacility.Asthemonthswenton,ithadseemedmoreandmoredifficulttohimtosaywhyheshouldnotrundowntoMiddlemarch—merelyforthesakeofhearingsomethingaboutDorothea;andifonsuchaflyingvisitheshouldchancebysomestrangecoincidencetomeetwithher,therewasnoreasonforhimtobeashamedofhavingtakenaninnocentjourneywhichhehadbeforehandsupposedthatheshouldnottake.Sincehewashopelesslydividedfromher,hemightsurelyventureintoherneighborhood;andastothesuspiciousfriendswhokeptadragonwatchoverher—theiropinionsseemedlessandlessimportantwithtimeandchangeofair.
AndtherehadcomeareasonquiteirrespectiveofDorothea,whichseemedtomakeajourneytoMiddlemarchasortofphilanthropicduty.
