           Mr.Casaubon,asmightbeexpected,spentagreatdealofhistimeattheGrangeintheseweeks,andthehindrancewhichcourtshipoccasionedtotheprogressofhisgreatworktheKeytoallMythologiesnaturallymadehimlookforwardthemoreeagerlytothehappyterminationofcourtship.Buthehaddeliberatelyincurredthehindrance,havingmadeuphismindthatitwasnowtimeforhimtoadornhislifewiththegracesoffemalecompanionship,toirradiatethegloomwhichfatiguewasapttohangovertheintervalsofstudiouslaborwiththeplayoffemalefancy,andtosecureinthis,hisculminatingage,thesolaceoffemaletendanceforhisdecliningyears.Hencehedeterminedtoabandonhimselftothestreamoffeeling,andperhapswassurprisedtofindwhatanexceedinglyshallowrillitwas.Asindroughtyregionsbaptismbyimmersioncouldonlybeperformedsymbolically,Mr.Casaubonfoundthatsprinklingwastheutmostapproachtoaplungewhichhisstreamwouldaffordhim;andheconcludedthatthepoetshadmuchexaggeratedtheforceofmasculinepassion.Nevertheless,heobservedwithpleasurethatMissBrookeshowedanardentsubmissiveaffectionwhichpromisedtofulfilhismostagreeableprevisionsofmarriage.
