Hispracticehadspreadinoneortwoquarters,andfromthefirstthereportofhishighfamilyhadledtohisbeingprettygenerallyinvited,sothattheothermedicalmenhadtomeethimatdinnerinthebesthouses;andhavingtomeetamanwhomyoudislikeisnotobservedalwaystoendinamutualattachment.TherewashardlyeversomuchunanimityamongthemasintheopinionthatLydgatewasanarrogantyoungfellow,andyetreadyforthesakeofultimatelypredominatingtoshowacrawlingsubserviencetoBulstrode.ThatMr.Farebrother,whosenamewasachiefflagoftheanti-Bulstrodeparty,alwaysdefendedLydgateandmadeafriendofhim,wasreferredtoFarebrother’sunaccountablewayoffightingonbothsides.
HerewasplentyofpreparationfortheoutburstofprofessionaldisgustattheannouncementofthelawsMr.BulstrodewaslayingdownforthedirectionoftheNewHospital,whichwerethemoreexasperatingbecausetherewasnopresentpossibilityofinterferingwithhiswillandpleasure,everybodyexceptLordMedlicotehavingrefusedhelptowardsthebuilding,onthegroundthattheypreferredgivingtotheOldInfirmary.Mr.Bulstrodemetalltheexpenses,andhadceasedtobesorrythathewaspurchasingtherighttocarryouthisnotionsofimprovementwithouthindrancefromprejudicedcoadjutors;buthehadhadtospendlargesums,andthebuildinghadlingered.
