           ItwasyoungDanforthwhodrewournoticetothecuriousregularitiesofthehighermountainskyline—regularitieslikeclingingfragmentsofperfectcubes,whichLakehadmentionedinhismessages,andwhichindeedjustifiedhiscomparisonwiththedreamlikesuggestionsofprimordialtempleruins,oncloudyAsianmountaintopssosubtlyandstrangelypaintedbyRoerich. TherewasindeedsomethinghauntinglyRoerich-likeaboutthiswholeunearthlycontinentofmountainousmystery. IhadfeltitinOctoberwhenwefirstcaughtsightofVictoriaLand,andIfeltitafreshnow. Ifelt,too,anotherwaveofuneasyconsciousnessofArchaeanmythicalresemblances; ofhowdisturbinglythislethalrealmcorrespondedtotheevillyfamedplateauofLengintheprimalwritings.
