Tofindtheminthisstatewaswhollyunexpected,andwewonderedwhatsortofmonstrousstrugglehadoccurreddownhereinthedark.
Penguins,attackedinabody,retaliatesavagelywiththeirbeaks,andourearsnowmadecertaintheexistenceofarookeryfarbeyond. Hadthoseothersdisturbedsuchaplaceandarousedmurderouspursuit? Theobstructionsdidnotsuggestit,forpenguins’beaksagainstthetoughtissuesLakehaddissectedcouldhardlyaccountfortheterribledamageourapproachingglancewasbeginningtomakeout. Besides,thehugeblindbirdswehadseenappearedtobesingularlypeaceful.
