HispreliminarysledgingandboringjourneyofJanuary11thto18thwithPabodieandfiveothers-marredbythelossoftwodogsinanupsetwhencrossingoneofthegreatpressureridgesintheice-hadbroughtupmoreandmoreoftheArchaeanslate;andevenIwasinterestedbythesingularprofusionofevidentfossilmarkingsinthatunbelievablyancientstratum. Thesemarkings,however,wereofveryprimitivelifeformsinvolvingnogreatparadoxexceptthatanylifeformsshouldoccurinrockasdefinitelypre-Cambrianasthisseemedtobe; henceIstillfailedtoseethegoodsenseofLake’sdemandforaninterludeinourtime-savingprogram-aninterluderequiringtheuseofallfourplanes,manymen,andthewholeoftheexpedition’smechanicalapparatus. Ididnot,intheend,vetotheplan,thoughIdecidednottoaccompanythenorthwestwardpartydespiteLake’spleaformygeologicaladvice. Whiletheyweregone,IwouldremainatthebasewithPabodieandfivemenandworkoutfinalplansfortheeastwardshift. Inpreparationforthistransfer,oneoftheplaneshadbeguntomoveupagoodgasolinesupplyfromMcMurdoSound;butthiscouldwaittemporarily. Ikeptwithmeonesledgeandninedogs,sinceitisunwisetobeatanytimewithoutpossibletransportationinanutterlytenantlessworldofaeon-longdeath.
Lake’ssubexpeditionintotheunknown,aseveryonewillrecall,sentoutitsownreportsfromtheshortwavetransmittersontheplanes; thesebeingsimultaneouslypickedupbyourapparatusatthesouthernbaseandbytheArkhamatMcMurdoSound,whencetheywererelayedtotheoutsideworldonwavelengthsuptofiftymeters.
