           Luckilyforhimonthisevening,hismovingandemphaticspeechesfoundfavourwithMadameDerville,whoveryoftenfoundhimasclumsyasachildandnotatallamusing.AsforMadamedeRênal,withherhandinJulien’s,shedidnothaveathought;shesimplyallowedherselftogoonliving.

           Thehoursspentunderthisgreatpinetree,plantedbyCharlestheBoldaccordingtothelocaltradition,werearealperiodofhappiness.Shelistenedwithdelighttothesoughingofthewindinthethickfoliageofthepinetreeandtothenoiseofsomestraydropswhichwerebeginningtofallupontheleaveswhichwerelowestdown.Julienfailedtonoticeonecircumstancewhich,ifhehad,wouldhavequicklyreassuredhim;MadamedeRênal,whohadbeenobligedtotakeawayherhand,becauseshehadgotuptohelphercousintopickupaflower-potwhichthewindhadknockedoveratherfeet,hadscarcelysatdownagainbeforeshegavehimherhandwithscarcelyanydifficultyandasthoughithadalreadybeenapre-arrangedthingbetweenthem.
