           Julienthoughthimselfsomewhatunworthyofsomuchdevotion.Asamatteroffact,hewastiredofheroism.Asimple,naïve,andalmosttimidtendernesswaswhatwouldhaveappealedtohim,whileMathilde’shaughtysoul,ontheotherhand,alwaysrequiredtheideaofapublicandanaudience.

           Inthemidstofallheranguishandallherfearsforthelifeofthatloverwhomshewasunwillingtosurvive,shefeltasecretneedofastonishingthepublicbytheextravaganceofherloveandthesublimityofheractions.

           Julienfeltirritatedatnotfindinghimselftouchedbyallthisheroism.
