           "What!Monsieur,"shesaidtohimatlast,"youknowLatin?"

           Theword"Monsieur"astonishedJuliensomuchthathereflectedforamoment.

           "Yes,Madame,"hesaidtimidly.

           MadamedeRênalwassohappythatshepluckedupthecouragetosaytoJulien,"Youwillnotscoldthepoorchildrentoomuch?"

           "Iscoldthem!"saidJulieninastonishment;"whyshouldI?"
