           OnthefollowingdayJulienattendedtwotheologylectures,andthencamebacktocopyoutabouttwentyletters.Hefoundayoungman,whothoughverycarefullydressed,hadameanappearanceandanenviousexpression,establishednearhiminthelibrary.

           Themarquisentered,"Whatareyoudoinghere,M.Tanbeau?"hesaidseverelytothenew-comer.

           "Ithought"answeredtheyoungman,withabasesmile.

           "No,monsieur,youthoughtnothingofthekind.Thisisatry-on,butitisanunfortunateone."

           YoungTanbeaugotupinarageanddisappeared.HewasanephewoftheacademicianwhowasafriendofMadamedelaMole,andintendedtotakeuptheprofessionofletters.Theacademicianhadinducedthemarquistotakehimasasecretary.Tanbeauusedtoworkinaseparateroom,buthavingheardofthefavourthatwasvouchsafedtoJulienhewishedtoshareit,andhehadgonethismorningandestablishedhisdeskinthelibrary.
